To work as a paralegal in New York City, you can either opt for an associate’s degree in paralegal studies, or a paralegal certificate. Different employers have different requirements of their staff, and one company may demand that their paralegals have a degree, while another may only require a certificate. At New York Career Institute, we offer two comprehensive programs that allow you to earn either an associate’s degree in paralegal studies or a paralegal certificate very quickly.
An associate’s degree in paralegal studies prepares students for a career as a paralegal or legal assistant at any law firm. Students will take courses in law theory, specialized terminology, and practical skills, and will complete an internship program.
Completion of our paralegal certificate program will afford you the opportunity to get an entry-level job as a paralegal or legal assistant at most law firms. At some firms, they distinguish between paralegals and legal assistants, and consider those with associate’s degrees to be paralegals, while those with a certificate are considered legal assistants or legal secretaries. The pay is typically lower for those who hold a paralegal certificate as opposed to an associate’s degree.
